The UK government has officially launched a rural 4G base station upgrade project, jointly funded by the country's four major mobile operators (EE, O2, Three UK, and Vodafone) and the government. This project, part of the £1 billion (approximately RMB 9.586 billion) Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative, involves a £501 million government contribution (approximately RMB 4.803 billion) and a £532 million joint contribution from the operators. The project aims to provide 4G coverage to 95% of the UK's land area through shared base station equipment. The upgrade will focus on the town of Hawes in North Yorkshire and surrounding rural villages, providing all-operator 4G service for the first time to 15 areas, including the North York Moors National Park. The technical solutions fall into two categories: sharing existing base station equipment in weak signal areas and building new base stations in unserved areas, allowing multi-operator sharing. The government has allocated an additional £184 million (approximately RMB 1.764 billion) to upgrade emergency service network base stations, making sites previously limited to EE users available to all operators. To date, the SRN project has expanded coverage to 34,000 square kilometers of land, 280,000 locations, and 16,000 kilometers of roads across the UK. In Yorkshire, the project has benefited from 494,000 kilometers of road coverage, significantly improving tourist navigation, business communications, and emergency response efficiency. UK Telecommunications Minister Chris Bryant emphasized that this initiative will "break down digital barriers and unleash the potential of rural economies," and will continue until 2027.
