In the communication network, the relay station is the "workstation" for signal transmission. In the traditional way, a relay station needs to be built every 100 kilometers or so. In ultra-long-distance communication transmission, a large number of relay stations will lead to increased costs. In this case, the relay-free optical communication system becomes a better choice. It can simplify the transmission line, directly realize the information transmission between the transmitter and the receiver, and reduce the overall system cost. It is widely used in special communication systems such as power grids, railways, highways, oil and gas pipelines to cross deserts, oceans, forests, swamps and other large uninhabited areas.
This experiment built an ultra-long span relay-free optical fiber transmission system by using the best electronic and optical systems, new spread spectrum modulation coding, ultra-low loss large effective area optical fiber, coherent receivers, high-performance Raman pumping and remote pump amplification technology. With a transmission rate of 2Mb/s and 2.5Gb/s, the transmission distance reached a world record of 1002.75km and 808.27km respectively.
